Don't let the name put you off. This is a bit expensive, but if you need a fish and chip fix, this covent garden plaice is a good option. Batter is really crisp. It started in 1871 (geeky info there)

Everyone Loves a Pun

As Fish & Chips goes - this place is very good. The price is steep though and although the portions are large it's not really worth it. The fact that it's small creates queues - that must be what is throwing off people's sense of value. Walk 10 minutes in any direction and you can find breaded deep-fried fish for less that will make your taste buds as happy. Credit where credit is due though - whomever named this place was inspired...

I think you need to check out superfish in waterloo - it's much better!! for example, the haddock is HUGE and there are more fat cabbies dining there - which is proof if needed

Almost as good as Grandpas

At one point last year I had been to this plaice (he he he) 3 times in a week. It was various lunches and dinners with friends but it’s a favourite with everyone so I just kept on eating there.

It’s the oldest fish and chip restaurant in London, first selling ‘jellied eels’ before you where a twinkle in your daddy’s eye. No it doesn’t have the same owners but the recipes have been passed down from chief to chief and the mushy peas are a must. The fish is fluffy and light and you definitely get a generous portion, even the fish cakes have impressed me.

In the summer the have lovely outside seating and hang Chinese lanterns and flowers which make it seem even more magical. This is possibly one of the best places to get a plate of fish and chips in central London, even if it is £10 a head.

Definitive London chippie

If I wanted chips in town, I'd always head here. The sit-down prices are a little expensive, but the taste is authentic. A hectic, small, bustling cafe, but the food is great. But don't take my word for it - go try it for yourself
