Beautiful Bistrotheque

This joint is located in what used to be considered the badlands east of Mare Street, before Art with a capital “A” hit the area, and the nearby Vyner Street became home to the hippest art venue in the Wallpaper Magazine list of hippest art venues. An ambitious idea, it combines a rather pleasant bar – chandeliers and old mahogany; a cabaret venue with a tepting programme – this has the feel of provincial amateur dramatics, with its velvet curtains, tiny stage and straight back chairs (but in a nice way); and a really rather posh restaurant upstairs, a bit stark and St Johnish with a separate private dining room. All this has been rather cleverly contained within a rather stark and unprepossessing old warehouse. Prices are at Hoxton/Shoreditch levels and service is good and helpful. My only criticism is that on two visits to the restaurant only two out of seventeen main course choices were vegetarian, and these were …. wait for it … Omelette Au Fine Herbs, or a pasta dish. So, not so hip or imaginative in the vegetarian department!

Beyond bistro

Housed in a converted sweatshop, Bistrotheque has great food and unique entertainment. An eclectic mix of transvestite talent shows, musical soap opera, cabaret, off-beat comedy and just about anything else you could legally stage , makes this a fabulous one-stop destination for the evening.
