Review of Pen & Wig

Favourite 5*

This is my favourite Cardiff pub, tucked away but still very findable, can get incredibly busy on a weekend night being one of the only good places to go in Cardiff these days.

The crowd is always really friendly, the bar staff are fantastic and the beer is Welsh and cheap.

There is a rear courtyard which is wicked to sit out in on a nice afternoon with some of their lovely food.

I go back everytime I go back.

Review of Carling Academy Islington

A slightly nicer academy than most 2*

The best thing about this venue is the air conditioning that blasts onto the dance floor to keep you cool.

You'll need it on a busy gig night because the place is far too small. There are two bars, serving the usual Carling Academy over priced tosh.

Your excuse for going to this venue is if you have nowhere else to see a particular live act. It's a little nicer to visit than both Bristol or Brixton academies.

Review of Carrefour

Great, friendly gym 4*

When I joined this gym it was a special offer and I got a very good deal, now I think it is a bit more pricey but worth it I feel. The only bad thing that originally put me off is the lack of a swimming pool, but its location and other benefits completely make up for this.

Right in the center of town, above the rush of shopping life you can enjoy a massive selection of free weight and circuit training (and a secret ladies weight room) as well as a large array of cardiovascular machines.

There is a cardiovascular room which is dark and cooler and plays louder music "the disco room".

The gym does all sorts of classes and has sun tanning facilities, none of which I have had any experience with yet.

The shower, sauna and stream room facilities are great.

Overall this gym is a large, clean and friendly place to work out. Thumbs up all round.

Review of Magic Roll

17 Apr 08, 14:18

is it really magic or is it just filling a roll and toasting it? 3*

Magic Roll's are generally great, this one on the triangle especially as it stays open late on the weekend, meaning you can avoid the kebab and grab something healthy.

All in all though, I find Magic Roll a little over priced for what it is, granted this one is slightly cheaper than the one on Redland Street near my office but slightly overpriced all the same.

A healthy late night snack, but if Sainsbury's is open you could make the same at home in the same time for a fraction of the cost.

Review of Sandwich Box

Not that bad 4*

It's not as bad as people would have you believe.

Granted, the women that run it smoke cigarettes and aren't the friendliest bunch in the world.

Wouldn't you be exactly the same if you had to be stuck in a sandwich shop all day trying to maintain a family on a pittance wage, serving food to ingrates?

I've never seen the place looking grubby, the food doesn't always look the most appealing, but for the price, who's complaining!

They serve a killer £3 hangover cure breakfast and pints of milk! Who could ask for more just yards from your office?

Review of The Hare On The Hill

Beauty 5*

Bath Ales flagship pub, small and pretty, with lovely beverages and lovely food and lovely bar staff.

A little of the beaten track, I would encourage anyone in seek of a traditional look and feel boozer to seek it out.

The drinks are at the lower end of expensive, and the home cooked food is very well priced (as well as being fantastic!)

They have a quiz on a Thursday, which is one of the most interesting I have ever taken part in.

Dart board too. Has to be one of my favourite pubs in Bristol.

Review of Wedges

Average Park St Rubbish 2*

I believe this place is now called Easy Tiger, but it hasn't really changed (maybe it has got less busy, but that's it).

It's small, has an uncomfortable feel to it, charges a lot of money for a small selection of drinks has a rather rubbish sound system.

I don't know why I went here, I don't know why anyone would really, I had a fun night because I was pissed but in retrospect for an average trashy Park St night out, I would have been better off going to the Cooler next door.

Review of The Nobody Inn

Best London Pub Yet 5*

I've only been to a handful of pubs in London compared to Bristol and South Wales, but this has to be the finest yet.

It comes to something when you think to yourself "oh that's fairly reasonable" when you are charged just £3.25 for a pint of Becks Vier.

The food is great and very affordable, the staff are lovely, they have several big screens, a couple of pool tables, and a pinball machine.

Its situated right on Newington Green so is an easy bus ride away from anywhere. Did I mention they have a pinball machine?

Review of Thekla

17 Apr 08, 13:13

Club on a Boat 3*

Thekla is an interesting venue, on board a permanently docked boat down on Bristol waterfront.

Since the overhaul a year or so ago, the price of drinks are more affordable and the bar is more accessible. They have gone for a more upmarket look in the upper bar whilst I kind of liked the dingy feel that still exists on the main dance floor downstairs.

The upper bar now opens in the daytime and you can get outside onto the deck, which is great on a sunny Friday afternoon!

Buy a ticket if you want to go to any big night at the Thekla, as it fills very quickly or even sells out.

Decent(ish) sound system, cool visual set up, affordable drinks (not a great selection), good selection of nights, generally cool!

They serve Bulmers on tap, the logic of which is beyond me.

Review of Fiddlers Night Club

17 Apr 08, 13:07

Best Live Music Venue in Bristol 5*

Beyond expectations! Bristol doesn't have the greatest selection of places with regular live music, but Fiddler's takes the crown of those that be.

Tucked away in Bedminster its off the beaten track but still large enough to fit a good size crowd.

The front area has a weird dining room style seating arrangement while the main room maybe has the occasional chair but features mainly around the large stage in one corner.

Good atmosphere, good size, good beer, good music, hooray for Fiddlers!
