Review of Le Piaf

Not as good as it could have been 2*

We dropped in here one night on the way home. It has a great location, and great building, but somehow the food just didn't match up to our expectations.

I had the Chicken Escalope Parmigiano and found it quite tasteless. The service was also a bit off, a bit slow and not very friendly. I didn't think that the toilets were in good shapre either.

This is a real pity as as I say above, the building is great and location in the village atmosphere should encourage a reasonable cafe.

We were left really wishing we had gone to Pizza Express over the road.

Historical landmark hotel 4*

This hotel is a landmark in Colchester. If you are going to stay in Colchester, stay here.

Rooms in the old front part of the building are extremely tastefully renovated to preserve the character of the building.

Don't drink too much as the floors do go up and down a bit and have the potential to leave you a bit sea sick!!

Nice place to stop for brunch 4*

When you're out buying your farm produce and your Aga from the adjoining shops, its definitely worth stopping for tea or brunch in the Bull Ring Tearooms.

They do a great scrambled eggs and full English.

Decor is nice and homely.

Make sure you get there early as it can get quite busy.

Best Eggs Benedict in West London! 5*

We weren't even planning to stop at Kew, but were overcome by the state of the traffic on Hangar Lane / Kew Bridge on the way to Richmond and decided to stop off.

I'm glad we did. From the outside this place looks very French and we weren't sure what the brunch offerings would be.

However, the food was great, and I haven't had such a good eggs benedict in a long time. If we're ever in those parts again we will definitely be going back.

Review of The Wet Fish Cafe

More exciting brunch - Not for those looking for a full English! 4*

We went to the Wet Fish last weekend for the first time in a long time.

We are usually stalwarts of J, but decided to mix it up.

The food was very good, with great scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Others had "coddled eggs" and something involving chorizo, eggs and potato.

If you are looking for a straight full English you won't find it here (although you could possibly order parts of many other things to make it up), but there's always time for a change!

The decor is good, with the original features of the old fish shop tastefully preserved. The service is also good.

We will be going again.

Review of The Freemasons Arms

A Mixed Bag 3*

I've had a mixed bag of experiences in this pub.

It was the subject of a huge redevelopment a few years ago when the whole place was overhauled. Unfortunately, the rumour was that they hadn't sized the kitchen properly and for a long time after the renovation it wasn't possible to eat at a table outside. This was a bit disappoointment as the outside seating area is large and is one of the best things about the pub. I'm not sure if this is still the case or not.

The decor inside is very chic and so are the people a lot of the time (I guess that is what you get with hanging out in Hampstead). The food is good, although it is wortwhile booking a table.

We've had a mixed bag of service, with sometimes with fairly offhand and snooty waiting staff, and other times very friendly.

Review of The Horseshoe

Newish Gastro Pub in Hampstead 3*

The Horseshoe is a newish renovation of an older pub. They've done a good job with weather wooden chairs and tables paired with modern paintwork.

The pub is always full on a Friday evening with drinkers, and eaters. Towards the back of the pub there is a restaurant serving a quality menu with a British bent.

It is not the cheapest meal you will have, but then you are in Hampstead.

I still prefer the menu at The Wells Inn, but that can be quite difficult to get into. In these situations The Horsehoe is a good back up.

Best Gastr Pub Meal in Hampstead 5*

I would agree with Sophie that this is the best gastro pub meal you will get in Hampstead.

I've eaten downstairs, which is the casual pub area, where you can eat inside or outside, and I've eaten upstairs, which is a smart restaurant.

The food is great. It will not be the cheapest meal you've had, expecially if you eat upstairs, but you'll definitely enjoy it!

Best Steak in NW6 4*

This restaurant is a gem to be discovered north of West Hampstead village on Fortune Green Road. As the others have said, it is small and cosy with good decor.

The service is good and if you are a steak lover you'll love the menu.

Although there are a number of cafes in West Hampstead, there are very few good restaurants.

Review of Prospect Of Whitby

25 Apr 08, 16:43

Pub you go to for the location 3*

The Prospect of Whitby makes its money on the back of its location and history.

It has an original pewter bar, and you can sit in the room and balcony out the back literally hanging over the Thames. While you are there look out for the hook they used to hang the pirates up on for three washes of the tide.

The service is not the fastest, the food is not the best, but it is totally reasonable. If you are looking for a taste of the wild old days of the docks, have a drink here.

The locals are also very friendly.
