<![CDATA[Greater London - Islington - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en Hidden gem http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/farringdon/shoe-shops/kate-kanzier-ec1n7tj.html#r53361 With an unobtrusive shop front it is a surprise to find the inside contains such unique and quirky shoes. The colourful, stylish designs are perfect eye candy for shoe lovers. The handbags are lovely too if you like the oversized type. My favourite place on Leather Lane.

Beer, fish fingers and electronica http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/farringdon/pubs/slaughtered-lamb-ec1v0dx.html#r53311 Airy yet comfy pub with a good selection of beers and live music in the basement (which sort of looks like a large living room). It can get quite busy on an evening - opt for a stool at the bar and be ready to pounce on a table.

Food-wise, you know you're in Clerkenwell when it costs £8.10 for fish fingers and chips! But this is not necessarily a bad thing at The Slaughtered Lamb. The menu is not expansive - 3 fish and chip variations, sausage and mash (meat and veggie varieties) and a few sandwiches. But what it does serve, it does really well. The fish fingers are home made and are wonderfully irregular, served with piping hot chips.

Excellent venue, and quite nice ice-cream too http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/angel/theatres/sadlers-wells-theatre-ec1r4tn.html#r53310 I always love a trip to Sadler's Wells... the lovely, modern entrance area is striking in this leafy North London street and inside rests an excellent theatre where most seats provide great views of the versatile stage. A great setting for some brilliant productions.

Cold Callers http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/farringdon/independent-financial-advisers/park-caledonia-associates-ec4m7hw.html#r53222 These people called me cold and unsolicited, despite my being registered with the Telephone Preference Service. If they have to tout for business like that, they can't be any good. Avoid.

The best thing to happen to Archway in years http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/archway/italian-restaurants/500-n193jh.html#r53113 This is what Archway has been crying out for: a really good local Italian restaurant. 500 (pronounced "cinquecento", like the car) is just plain fabulous. When I went, I had Gnocchi di patate con salsa di salsiccia, or sausage gnocchi to you and me, and it was splendid - the gnocchi were gloriously light and fluffly little pillows, the sauce rich with just a hint of heat. It was like a hug in a bowl. My dining companion's lamb was also to die for, done to a turn and with an anchovy and rosemary sauce that was surprisingly delicate. I ordered tiramisu for dessert, and by God I'm glad I did (but I doubt it did anything to help my waistline). The dessert wine suggestion next to each pudding was also a nice touch. The Italo-centric wine list was excellent and also affordable, with wine by the glass starting at a credit-crunch-busting £2.05. This really is the little local restaurant of your dreams. And it's becoming deservedly popular - we only just got a table, despite going at 7pm on a Wednesday night. If you're hungry for excellent Italian food, make a beeline to Archway. But make sure you book ahead.

Polenta with your pint sir? http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/islington/canonbury/pubs/the-edinburgh-cellars-n14ra.html#r52940 Why did they do it? Why?

Ok, the previous incarnation was a bit crimey - in my final two visits I was offered a bass guitar and a pair of Levis by a fat junkie, the next time a plainclothes policeman arrested a guy midway through his attempts to sell me a stolen mobile phone - and it was a bit scary when the landlords boar sized muscle dog fell asleep on my lap, but it had charm, a charm which it now sorely lacks.

The previous thai food was great, the regulars friendly and it was a good old fashioned boozer. The newly ponced up version is staffed by nathan barley sorts with asymetric hair and too many buttons on their cardigans, the booze is more expensive but no better and it seems to play mid 90s house music. Its ok, but I reckon its a crying shame that most of the regulars have been forced out but yet more unnecessary brewery rhinoplasty.
